Week 4

This week's question is 'What plants grow in the woods?'

Phonics

Ask your child if they are in Mrs Millar's Letterland Group or Mrs Taylor's so that you can access the correct work.

This week Mrs Millar's group are learning about Uppy Umbrella 'u' and Red Robot 'r'. Have a look on your Phonics Online account and encourage your child to learn about who these characters are and what sounds their letters make. Listen to their stories and explore their pictures looking for all of the items that have the initial sound 'u' or 'r'. After learning the songs and chants you can access Phonics Reader 4 stories Mop it up! and Red Robot Runs to practice reading.

Mrs Millar's group are also learning about blending sounds to read words, using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r and m. Try making some sound cards by writing a sound on a small piece of paper or card. Repeat this for all of the sounds until you have a full set and then start with the word 'at' place these sound cards on a surface and encourage your child to try to blend them. In Letterland we use something called 'the roller coaster trick' which the children in school will be introduced to this week. If you would like to know what this is then please have a look at the roller coaster trick video on this web page: https://www.letterland.com/training/videos

Repeat this with words such as up, cup, cut, dug, tug, mud, gum, sun, nut, duck, muck, rat, ran, rag, red, rid, rip, rod, rug and rock.

Use your decodable sentence books for lesson 17 and 18 and encourage your child to read the sentences and spot the target sounds.

Encourage your child to copy these sentences underneath making sure they are using neatly formed letters. If they are finding a letter challenging to form then find the Letterland character on Phonics Online and watch the handwriting song to support correcting their formation.

This week Mrs Taylor's group are learning about adjacent consonants. Have a look on your Phonics Online account and encourage your child to learn about the spelling patterns for br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr and tr. Listen to their chants and then access Phonics Reader 8 Drip, drip, drop to practice reading.

Use your decodable sentence books for lesson 35 and encourage your child to read the sentences and spot the target sounds.

Encourage your child to copy these sentences underneath making sure they are using neatly formed letters. If they are finding a letter challenging to form then find the Letterland character on Phonics Online and watch the handwriting song to support correcting their formation.

During these sessions we will also be learning the tricky word 'sees' - we will be pulling the words apart to discover that the letters 'e' and 'e' are not making the correct sound in 'see'. Later the children will learn about the digraph 'ee' so this word will no longer continue to be tricky.

Mrs Taylor's group are also learning about blending and segmenting the sounds to read and write words, using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l, ff, ll, ss, j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, ng and m.

Repeat this with words such as brag, brick, bring, crack, crab, cross, drag, dress, drop, frog, fret, frill, grab, grip, grin, press, pram, prop, trap, trick and truck.

Understanding of the world and art

This week we will be learning about the trees and other plants that we might find in the woods. We will be taking lots of walks around the school grounds, looking at trees and then returning to the classroom to use https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/a-z-of-british-trees/  to help us to identify what we have found. If you have a garden, encourage your child to go out into it and try to spot some of these trees and other plants - make sure you emphasise how we must be careful as some plants (such as holly, nettle and thistle) can harm us if we touch them.

In our art sessions we are going to be learning about drawing willow. We will also look at where China is and ask 'Do they have willow in China?' We will then use the Chinese technique of ink wash painting to try to create willow paintings.

Please upload your child's artwork to Tapestry.

PE

One of our lovely parents highlighted to me that Joe Wicks has paired up with Hey Duggee! to create a series of workout challenges for children. They can be found here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyCLoPd4VxBvIsxs4yYGusHvaTq9vhN0H

So if your child is feeling well enough to jump around then this might be a great option for them to take part in.

Remember to add a photo of this to Tapestry.
