Term 1- Did WW1 or WW2 have the biggest impact on our locality?

Hello and a warm welcome to the Deer Class (Year 6) class page, we are very excited to share the children's learning with you throughout this term. Our first Parent Event is a tea dance on 20th October 2023, keep an eye out for a special invitation with more details.  Below you will find this term's newsletter with an overview of all of the learning the children will be doing. PE kits need to be in school everyday and our Forest School day is Friday.

Below you will find, the enquiry mat for this term's enquiry about how WW1 and WW2 affected the local area. On here you will find lots of useful information that you can also use as discussion points with your children. Although there is so much to learn about each of the World Wars, what makes our enquiry special is that we investigate and analyse what it was like for the people of Boston during those times and how the local area was affected.

PE-WW1 and WW2 Dancing

This was our very first lesson and the children learnt the steps to the pre-war dance- the Charleston. After learning about the history of the dance, the children gained an understanding of  how facial expressions, energy and a sense of fun needed to be conveyed during the dance.

Reading

We are incredibly lucky to have a whole class set of 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. These are a fantastic resource to be able to use in our reading lessons. In the pictures below, you can see the children using them in our first reading lessons of the term.

PSHE

The children worked in small groups to design a bridge that would strong enough to hold a small toy car. The children reflected on the amount of communication, team work and negotiation was needed to create a complete structure- that actual worked!

RE

What does it mean if God is loving and holy?

In the first lesson of the new term, the children thought about key vocabulary that links to God. They then thought about how they would apply this to a God that they designed. They classified vocabulary in order to prioritise which words would be most relevant to their God.

Computing

In the first lesson of the term, the children explored the BBC Micro bit and followed some tutorials. Afterwards, as a class we discussed key vocabulary from the lesson such as input, output and code.

Enquiry work throughout the term

The photos below show a range of work from our enquiry this term. We started with a mind map at the beginning of the term to show our current knowledge and ended the term completing another mind map to show what we have learnt throughout the whole term. It was really interesting to learn about how Boston was affecting during the wars and how it was also a potential target because of the port!
