As we progress through Section 2 (the formal phonics teaching), the children will continue to dive into each sound with greater depth and start to explore listening more closely to the sounds in words, writing sounds and starting to read words.

In Week 1, our target sounds will be i and n.

Make sure your child spends lots of time on Phonics Online exploring these sounds, and begin now to use the 'Explore' tab for each sound. Encourage your child to click on the pictures as they identify things that have the target sound at the beginning of their words.

They will be given reading books to support their phonics learning now and they can also start to access their decodable sentence books (re-reading the sentences an trying to copy write them).

Maths

The sessions for maths have been recorded already so that you can access them at home. Follow this link and support your child in watching one session per day for the topic titled It's Me, 1, 2, 3! Sessions 1-5.

Understanding the World

We are going to be exploring which of the materials used by the pigs would burn (following the fire breathing dragon scenario). If you have access to a safe place to explore items that burn maybe you could demonstrate to you child which materials burn and how we can be safe when using these materials (e.g. never place a burning candle near to straw etc.).

Art

We are going to be exploring creating art inspired by fireworks. We will be using black paper and chalks. If you have some black paper and chalks or paints maybe your child could explore this as well. We will be playing videos of firework displays so that the children are really secure about what we mean by fireworks. There are lots available of YouTube.

Art

We are going to be engaging in lots of art this week - exploring creating artworks in the style of Kandinsky. We will be trying to decide how Elmer would look if he met Kandinsky. Maybe you could find an outline of Elmer the elephant online and encourage your child to colour him in this style.
