Term 4 - What impact do Natural Disasters have on our world?
Our new enquiry this term is, 'What impact do Natural Disasters have on our world?'
We are excited to build on our previous knowledge in Geography about volcanoes and learn how hurricanes, and tsunamis are formed, the damage they can create and the impact these disasters have on our world. We will also learn about climate change and the important work of disaster charities. Our authentic, entrepreneurial outcome this term will be to design and create a product in DT that we can sell to raise money for a disaster charity of our choosing.

Stunning final pieces in English
The Deer Class have worked incredibly hard to publish their explanation text writing. There are some stunning examples below:
Equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages in Maths
We have been super impressed with the progress seen in Maths this term with finding equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages! How many equivalences do you know?
Learning new stitches in DT
In our DT lesson this week, we recapped how to thread and needle and then practiced the running stitch, cross stitch and blanket stitch in preparation for making our own pencil cases.
Orienteering fun in PE
We have been developing our teamwork, co-ordination and map reading skills to complete different challenges in PE. So far this term, we have worked in pairs to follow a plan and create a face based on instructions given and this week we used our school's orienteering course to apply our new map reading skills. The competitive side came out in lots of the Deer Class and we loved trying to race each other to find the correct marker!
Excellent explanation texts in English!
We have loved learning to write to inform using the genre of explanation texts in English. We have also been applying our Geography learning to support our writing. We have been busy learning about the features of an explanation text, applying grammar to our drafted sentences and then drafting our own versions of an explanation text. Check back here later this week to see the final published versions!
Making great use of our learning environment in Enquiry
Our Enquiry working wall is an excellent tool for helping the Deer Class to retrieve their learning. Look how our learning journey has progressed since Week One!
I cannot wait to learn more about Natural Disasters with the children this week. We will be exploring the difference between hurricanes and tornadoes and deciding which has the biggest impact on our world. I wonder what your opinion is on this?
Classifying animals in Science
In Science, we have been exploring how animals are classified according to their characteristics. Check out this wonderful writing from the Deer Class below:
We've made a great start to our enquiry lessons!
In today’s lesson, we shared our current knowledge of natural disasters and their impact on the world on our mind map.
We then learnt that a natural disaster is a major event caused by natural processes of the Earth; examples include floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic processes. A natural disaster causes loss of life or property damage, and leaves some economic damage after it has been completed.
Curious about this, we researched different natural disasters and found out how and why they occur, where in the world they usually happen and what damage they can cause.
Here are some of our mind maps; more can be found on our working wall:
