Phonics

This week we are learning the new sounds:

j like in jam, this is a single sound (one letter making the sound)

dge like in badge, this is a trigraph (3 letters making the sound)

v like in vet, this is a single sound

wh like in when , this is a digraph (2 letters making the sound)

Warm up each day for phonics by watching the phonics warm up video in the video resource section of our website:

https://wyberton-primary-academy.primarysite.media/media/phonics-warm-up-video-sound-recall-summer-term

Start your phonics time by having 4 word cards with words containing the new sound but don't tell your child the new sound yet. See if they can work out what it is by you sounding out and then blending the word.

The following word lists contain words that have sounds the children have already learned with the new sound being the only unknown one.

j - jet (j-e-t), jam (j-a-m), job (j-o-b), Jack (J-a-ck), which sound do you see in all of these words? which sound have you not learned about yet in school?

dge - badge(b-a-dge), ridge (r-i-dge), fudge (f-u-dge), hedge (h-e-dge), which sound do you see in all of these words? which sound have you not learned about yet in school?

v - vet(v-e-t), rev (r-e-v), van (v-a-n), vat (v-a-t), which sound do you see in all of these words? which sound have you not learned about yet in school?

wh - when (wh-e-n), whizz (wh-i-zz), whiff (wh-i-ff), whack (wh-a-ck), which sound do you see in all of these words? which sound have you not learned about yet in school?

Only introduce one new sound each day then work with that new sound over the day to make sure your children can recognise it.

Ideas for securing this knowledge:

Hide and seek words: hide your word cards around the house, encourage your children to hunt for them and read them to you.

Handwriting: give your child some paper and mark making tools (pencils, pens, paint etc.) encourage them to use the correct letter formation whilst recreating the written form of the sound or copy writing the words from your word cards.

Guidance about the correct letter formation can be found here: https://teachhandwriting.co.uk/print-letters-beginners.html

This activity can be extended by asking you children to put the words into a sentence and try to write this.

Reading books and magazines: encourage your children to identify their target sound in words.

PSED

This week in our circle times we are continuing to think about what makes somebody a good friend. Chat with your children about this and ask them what sorts of things they have done to be a good friend.

Maths

This week we are practicing labelling groups with numbers, ordering numbers and matching patterns.

Warm up everyday by encouraging your child to count their own actions to 20. This could be 20 jumps, 20 claps, 20 bum wiggles. They could also count their toys if they are not feeling well enough to jump around.

Have a set of number cards to 10 and encourage your child to use their toys, or pasta or pegs (anything that you have a lot of and is safe for them to handle) to count out groups and use the number cards to label them. Maybe they could hunt around the house and label groups of items using their number cards e.g. 1 next to a single lamp, 2 next to a pair of socks etc.

Encourage your child to order these number cards and begin to play a missing number game with them where you ask them to close their eyes and you take away a number. They have to work out which number is missing.

Our pattern work this week is looking at matching things that have the same pattern. You could give your child a jumbled pile of socks or gloves (or both) for them to pair up to help to develop this skill.
