Week 1

This week's question is 'Why are vegetables important?'

Phonics

Ask your child if they are in Mrs Millar's Letterland Group or Mrs Taylor's so that you can access the correct work.

This week Mrs Millar's group are learning about Lucy Lamp Light 'l' and the digraph 'ss'. Have a look on your Phonics Online account and encourage your child to learn about who Lucy is and which two characters are working together to make the digraph 'ss'.

Listen to their stories and explore Lucy's picture looking for all of the items that have the initial sound 'l'. After learning the songs and chants you can access Phonics Reader 5 story Leg Rest to practice reading.

Mrs Millar's group are also learning about blending sounds to read words, using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h. l, ss and m. Try making some sound cards by writing a sound on a small piece of paper or card. Repeat this for all of the sounds until you have a full set and then start with the word 'at' place these sound cards on a surface and encourage your child to try to blend them. In Letterland we use something called 'the roller coaster trick' which the children in school will be introduced to this week. If you would like to know what this is then please have a look at the roller coaster trick video on this web page: https://www.letterland.com/training/videos

Repeat this with words such as lot, loss, let, lip, lad, miss, pass, mess, fuss.

Use your decodable sentence books for lessons 23 and 24 and encourage your child to read the sentences and spot the target sounds.

Encourage your child to copy these sentences underneath making sure they are using neatly formed letters. If they are finding a letter challenging to form then find the Letterland character on Phonics Online and watch the handwriting song to support correcting their formation.

This week Mrs Taylor's group are learning about adjacent consonants at the end of words - nt, nd and nk. Have a look on your Phonics Online account and encourage your child to learn about the spelling patterns for these blends. Listen to their chants and then access Phonics Reader 8 Skid, Smack to practice reading. There is a lot to learn in this lesson so we are going to be spreading the content out over the whole week.

Use your decodable sentence books for lesson 37 and encourage your child to read the sentences and spot the target sounds.

Encourage your child to copy these sentences underneath making sure they are using neatly formed letters. If they are finding a letter challenging to form then find the Letterland character on Phonics Online and watch the handwriting song to support correcting their formation.

During these sessions we will also be learning the tricky words 'we' and 'snow' - we will be pulling the words apart to discover that the letter 'e' is not making the correct sound in 'we' and the letters 'o' and 'w' are not making the correct sounds in snow. A little further into the children's phonics learning these words will stop being tricky as they will learn about the spelling pattern for these letters.

Mrs Taylor's group are also learning about blending and segmenting the sounds to read and write words, using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l, ff, ll, ss, j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, ng and m.

Repeat this with words such as and, hand, sand, stand, end, send, went, ant, plant, pant, sent, hint, ink, pink, drink, wink, sink, sank.

Understanding of the world and PSED

This week we will be learning about the importance of healthy food as a way of looking after ourselves. We will be looking at the NHS guidance - The Eatwell Plate, and learning the value of vegetables in our diet. Have a look at this plate with your child. What foods do they already eat? Maybe you could encourage them to draw some pictures of fruits, vegetables, cakes etc and then together sort them into groups labelled 'healthy for my body' and 'things that I should only enjoy as a treat sometimes'. We will be learning how foods high in sugar and fats are not a good choice for our bodies and should only be eaten as a treat sometimes.

We will also be explore the concept of 'fairness' - what this means and how it feels when a situation is fair or is not fair and what we can do about it. We will be helping the children to become feeling detectives - exploring what behaviour they are seeing in themselves or others and what that might mean they or others are feeling.

Please upload your child's artwork to Tapestry.

PE

This term we are learning sports day skills ready for our upcoming sports day. This week we will be learning how to throw a foam javelin. Maybe you have something soft and long that the children could use to perform an over arm throw with - such as a pool noodle.

Remember to add a photo of this to Tapestry.

Art and music

We will be exploring junk this term and how we can use it to sculpt and make musical instruments. Try giving your child a selection of clean rubbish from your recycling bin and seeing if they can create their own face and your face.

Which pieces of rubbish could be used to make an instrument? Maybe bottles filled with pasta?

Remember to add a photo of this to Tapestry.
