Term 5- Where could I travel to?
Summer Term 1 Newsletter
This term we will explore the enquiry question: Where could I travel to? We will focus on various modes of transport and various locations across the world. We will learn about famous explorers and key figures in transport history and investigate how transport has changed over time. We will also be exploring outer space! We are very excited to see where our learning takes us!
Week 1:
This week we introduced our Enquiry question: Where could I travel to?
To begin we read the story ‘Here We Are’ by Oliver Jeffers. This story introduced us to planet Earth and explored the journey of land, sky, space and time. The children enjoyed exploring the images on each page and made observations as we went through the story.
Week 2:
This week we read the story: Mr Amitage on Wheels. The children identified all the transport with wheels in the story. We talked about other vehicles that have wheels, and where we could travel to using those vehicles. The children talked about their own journeys they have taken.
We identified England and Wyberton on Google Maps. One of the children told us that she flew to Poland and has family that live there. We found Poland on Google Maps and looked at the where it was in relation to England.
Week 3:
This week we looked at the world map. Children shared their own experiences of travelling and we identified the places on the map. The children spoke about how they travelled to those places.
- C went to Spain on holiday on an aeroplane.
- A went to Wales in a car.
- Miss Denton went to Florida in American on an aeroplane.
- A goes in a car to Boston.
- A went to Skegness on a train.
- V walks to school.
- L goes to Kirton in a car.
- A went to Poland on an aeroplane.
- N went to Lithuania on an aeroplane.
- S Mum and Dad went on an aeroplane to South Africa.
- A went on an aeroplane to Gran Canaria.
- J would like to go back in time to see the dinosaurs.

Week 4:
This week we read the story ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. We talked about the journey that the penguin and the boy had taken. The children wanted to know where Penguins lived so we explored Google Maps again and found Antarctica. The children then designed a boat and made a list of materials they would need.
Week 5:
This week the children created some artwork using marbles to map out a journey. From this, the children decided where there journey would take them and how they would get there. The children then completed some writing about transport.
Week 6:
This week we read the story ‘Astro Girl’ by Ken Wilson-Max. The children role-played blasting off into Space and walking on the Moon with no gravity. The children then chose what they would take with them into Space. The children wrote sentences for Space travel. We finished off our term with our Parent Event where grown-ups and children could design a rocket, create a form of transport using junk modelling and paint a picture of a hot or cold destination.
