Week 3

Continuing on from last week, this week's question is 'Why are fruits and vegetables important?'

Phonics

Ask your child if they are in Mrs Millar's Letterland Group or Mrs Taylor's so that you can access the correct work.

This week Mrs Millar's group are learning about adding suffixes to words and the single sound 'j'. Have a look on your Phonics Online account and encourage your child to learn about Jumping Jim.

Listen to his story and after learning the songs and chants you can access Phonics Reader 6 Just Jump to practice reading.

Mrs Millar's group are also learning about blending sounds to read words, using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h. l, ss, ff, ll, j and m. Try making some sound cards by writing a sound on a small piece of paper or card. Repeat this for all of the sounds until you have a full set and then start with the word 'at' place these sound cards on a surface and encourage your child to try to blend them. In Letterland we use something called 'the roller coaster trick' which the children in school will be introduced to this week. If you would like to know what this is then please have a look at the roller coaster trick video on this web page: https://www.letterland.com/training/videos

Repeat this with words such as jam, Jess, job, jobs, jog, jets, Jim, jig, Jack and jug.

Use your decodable sentence books for lessons 25 and 26 and encourage your child to read the sentences and spot the target sounds.

Encourage your child to copy these sentences underneath making sure they are using neatly formed letters. If they are finding a letter challenging to form then find the Letterland character on Phonics Online and watch the handwriting song to support correcting their formation.

This week Mrs Taylor's group are continuing with 'Section 3' of Letterland. In this section we are going to be learning a lot more digraphs. A digraph is a sound that is represented by 2 letters - such as the sound 'sh' in shop. This week we are learning about the digraphs 'th', 'wh' and 'ph'. Have a look on your Phonics Online account and encourage your child to learn about the spelling patterns for these digraphs as well as their stories and songs. Access Blue Series Phonics Reader 1 story 3 - What is that things? to practice reading.

Use your new decodable sentence books for lesson 40 and 41 and encourage your child to read the sentences and spot the target sounds.

Encourage your child to copy these sentences underneath making sure they are using neatly formed letters. If they are finding a letter challenging to form then find the Letterland character on Phonics Online and watch the handwriting song to support correcting their formation.

During these sessions we will also be learning the tricky word 'my' - we will be pulling the word apart to discover that the letter 'y' is not making the correct sound.

Mrs Taylor's group are also learning about blending and segmenting the sounds to read and write words, using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l, ff, ll, ss, j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, ng, ch, sh, th, wh, ph and m.

Repeat this with words such as that, this, than, then, maths, thick, path, baths, things, when, whiff, which, whisk, phonics, graph, dolphin and alphabet.

Understanding of the world and PSED

This week we will be continuing to learn about the importance of healthy food as a way of looking after ourselves. We will be looking at the NHS guidance - The Eatwell Plate, and learning the value of vegetables and fruit in our diet. Have a look at this plate with your child. What foods do they already eat? Maybe you could encourage them to draw some pictures of fruits, vegetables, cakes etc and then together sort them into groups labelled 'healthy for my body' and 'things that I should only enjoy as a treat sometimes'. We will be learning how foods high in sugar and fats are not a good choice for our bodies and should only be eaten as a treat sometimes.

We will also continue to explore the concept of 'fairness' - what this means and how it feels when a situation is fair or is not fair and what we can do about it. We will be helping the children to become feeling detectives - exploring what behaviour they are seeing in themselves or others and what that might mean they or others are feeling.

Please upload your child's artwork to Tapestry.

PE

This term we are learning sports day skills ready for our upcoming sports day. This week we will be learning how to throw a bean bag shot put. Maybe you have something like a sock that could be pilled with dry pasta that your child could try throwing. Try finding videos of Olympic shot put throwers so that your child understands what this sport is. Note - we do not do the spinning part of the launch, we perform a standing throw.

Remember to add a photo of this to Tapestry.

Art and music

We will be exploring junk this term and how we can use it to sculpt and make musical instruments. Try giving your child a selection of clean rubbish from your recycling bin and seeing if they can create their own face and your face.

Which pieces of rubbish could be used to make an instrument? Maybe bottles filled with pasta?

Remember to add a photo of this to Tapestry.
