Weeks 1 and 2

Letterland Phonics

Please ask your child if they are in Mrs Millar's Phonics group or Mrs Taylor's.

Mrs Taylor's Phonics

Over the next 2 weeks we are going to be learning about the diagraphs ai, ay and e-e. Encourage your child to log into their Phonics Online account and explore the 'Meet the Letterlanders' section to find out all about these digraphs and the stories that are going to make them easier to recall for the children.

To support their reading skills please access the Blue Series Reader 2 stories Kate Bakes a Cake and Kane's Tail.

The decodable sentences for lesson 44 and 45 will support this learning - listen to your child read them and then encourage them to write the sentences in that space underneath each one.

Mrs Millar's Phonics

Over the next 2 weeks we are going to be learning about the single sounds y and z. Encourage your child to log into their Phonics Online account and explore the 'Meet the Letterlanders' section to find out all about these sounds and the stories that are going to make them easier to recall for the children.

To support their reading skills please access the Red Series Reader 7 stories Yo-yo Man's Yams and Zig Zag.

The decodable sentences for lesson 30 and 31 will support this learning - listen to your child read them and then encourage them to write the sentences in that space underneath each one.

Understanding of the World

Learning the continent names

Over this term we will be helping the children to learn the names of the continents of the world. Here is a video to help. Encourage your child to watch it and sing along.

Comparing life for some children in Tanzania to our own.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be helping the children to appreciate that some children in Tanzania have lives very similar to ours but some children do not. We will watch lots of video clips showing the differences and similarities including this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmH3U39mZ88

African Animals

Over the next couple of weeks we will be helping the children to compare the animals found in Tanzania to the ones we learned about in our garden bird and woodland enquiries. We will be watching the following video to help to develop their knowledge of these animals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLbwqAYozZM

Expressive Arts

Edward Tinga Tinga

Over the next couple of weeks we will be helping the children to learn about Edward Tinga Tinga - an African artist who developed a style of using bright colours and patterns to create paintings on the inside of mud huts. The children will be supported as they try to make their own artworks in his style. The animation 'Tinga Tales' uses this style of artwork so try to take some time to watch a couple of episodes to inspire your child's artwork.

Mud Hut Sculptures

Over the next couple of weeks we will guide the children in exploring form by creating a clay representation of a mud hut. If you don't have clay at home you could mix up some play dough. Try finding images of cylindrical mud huts on the internet and encouraging your child to try to re-create this form.

Music

Over the next term our music lessons are going to be concentrating on learning the songs we need to know for our assembly. This is a version of 'walking through the jungle' by Barefoot Books and can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plvY0quSyJg we will be changing the words quite a bit but the structure is very similar.

PSED

Circle Times

Over the next term we are going to be helping the children to get ready for their move up to Year 1. We will be talking a lot about how they felt when they first started in Reception and what advice they would give to the next Reception class.
