Term 2- How is our local area changing?
Term 2: How is our local area changing?
Our enquiry for this term will focus upon the geography of the UK. Over time, the UK has changed depending upon how humans use it. Examples might be increasing numbers buildings in towns or villages. These changes are known as human geography. We will compare this to how the physical geography affects the human geography and why some areas have experienced more change than others.
We have a very busy term as we are preparing for our Business and Enterprise project and our Christingle service too. Our newsletter is below with our key dates.
Week 7- Christingle preparations
This week, we have worked together to design a Christingle service. We have looked at the features we needed to include, worked out an order of service. Next we auditioned parts and everyone has got a role in the service, which we're looking forward to leading at the end of term.
Week 6
This week we've been creating our business and enterprise product. Setting tight deadlines because of the shelf-life of the product, we worked out teams and a timetable for production. Our dough makers delivered their stage on time so that the baking team could roll and cut the individual biscuits. After baking they will be stored ready for extravagant icing next week.
In English this week we have been learning about plastics and their dangers. We have used our science knowledge to gather information about plastics and we are going to create a magazine article explaining about them.
To inspire us, we made our own plastic from raw materials on Monday and this irreversible process has hardened to a completely different material from those we started with.
Week 5
This week we explored our art project for the term. We experimented with our printing blocks and developed our carving skills to create more white space. As our aim is to have a modern art style mono print, this is a more developed skill than our Term 1 printing. We found it tricky but persevered to create good results. We enjoyed using the rollers to create an even layer of ink and loved the textured effect that it left on the paper.

Week 4
PSHE this week was about communication. We learnt about how changes in the way we address someone speaking to us (such as not looking at them) can greatly affect how the other person reacts.
We roleplayed scenarios where we tried to engage the other person and where we sometimes deliberately broke the rules of an engaging conversation. We were surprised at how small changes in our body language have a big effect.

Week 3
This week we've been investigating square and cube numbers. Most adults know that a square number is a number times itself and that a cube number is a number times itself and then again. However, most adults don't know why they're called this.
Using our multi link cubes, we investigate the properties of square and cube numbers and found that we could either build squares or cubes from them.
Remembrance workshop at the church
This week, following our Remembrance assembly in school, Year 5 walked to the local church. There, we listened to presentations about why this is commemorated and how it links to our local community. We enjoyed a spirited walk down there and back and had a lovely time celebrating in our community.
Diwali workshop
The children were treated to an amazing Diwali workshop this week. Taking part in traditional dances and celebrations, they learnt about the festival and even acted out the traditional story of Rama and Sita.
Science- Irreversible changes
This week, we investigated how changes can be made to materials. The children learnt about three different types of reactions- reversible, irreversible and chemical. We then created a little test to show how some chemicals can be mixed but that different combinations produce different types of reactions.
