Term 3- What did the Ancient Greeks do for us?
Hello and a welcome back to the Deer Class (Year 6) class page, we are very excited to share the children's learning with you throughout this term. Our next Parent Event is on Thursday 6th February at 2:30pm, where there will be an art gallery of your children's pottery and there will be an opportunity for you to learn the different skills needed to make an Ancient Greek Pot. Below you will find this term's newsletter with an overview of all of the learning the children will be doing. Children will need to wear their PE kits to school on a Wednesday and Thursday and our Forest School day is Friday.
Below you will find, the enquiry mat for this term's enquiry- 'What did the Ancient Greeks do for us?' On here, you will find lots of useful information that you can also use as discussion points with your children. The children will take part in an in-depth enquiry about the Ancient Greeks, who they were, how they lived and the legacy that they left behind.
PSHE
This term, we are focusing on how we can keep ourselves safe. The children looked at different situations and discussed if they were illegal or legal. They justified their answers and developed their understanding about current laws and age limits.

Art
Throughout this term, the children are researching the work of Eleni Vernadaki and comparing her work with Ancient Greek Pottery. They will then develop their understanding of skills needed to create a clay pot. In the lesson below, you can see the children are practising these skills with playdough, in readiness for designing a pot before creating a final piece with clay.
PE
One of the units that the children are learning about is gymnastics. The children are learning about different ways of creating a sequence of movements of different shapes and heights that incorporate different balances.

Science
In Science, the children are learning about the following:
- identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood
- recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function
- describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans
In the lesson below, the children are conducting an experiment to find out what impact exercise has on the heart.

Ancient Greek Myths
For the first part of this term, the children have been learning about Greek Myths and eventually wrote their own. This was a great opportunity to share these with Year 4 and Year 5, who had also been learning about different types of myths. What a great authentic outcome!
Clay slips in Art
After spending a sustained amount of time creating their pots using the skills they had been taught, the children then added handles to their clay pots, attaching these using a clay slip.
Paralympic Workshop
We welcomed Matt Haslam from Thomas Middlecott to do a workshop showing us all about paralympic games such as Boccia and Goal Ball. The children were able to view these sports from a different perspective and enjoyed taking part in a new sport.
Ancient Greek Workshop from Portals to the Past
On Monday 3rd February we welcomed Portals to the Past into school for an Ancient Greek Workshop. The day was spent learning about Alexander the Great, the legacies that the Ancient Greeks left us, warfare and what an Ancient Greek soldier looked like. During our time in the classroom, the children took part in quizzes, played an Ancient Greek games and attempted a puzzle based on the work of Archimedes.
Term 3 Parent Event
Parents were able to view an art gallery of the clay pots that the children had made and then took part in a skills workshop, where the children had the opportunity to showcase the skills they used to make their own clay pots. Parents had the opportunity to make their own pots from playdough!
Residential to North Wales-Monday 10th- Friday 14th February 2025.
All of the photos below are from the week we spent in North Wales. There are over 500 photos showing all of the activities that the children did over the 5 days that we were there. It was an incredible week and although the mud has washed away, the memories will last a life time!
Athlete visit- Rebekah Green
We were very lucky to have another visit from an up-and-coming athlete from Sports for Champions. The whole school were involved and took part in a sponsored fitness circuit with Rebekah. Afterwards, Rebekah spoke to the whole school about her life and her sport-freestyle kayaking!
