Term 3- Would the Vikings do anything for money?

Term 3

Our enquiry this term will focus upon history.  Our question is "Would the Vikings do anything for money?"

In answering this we will explore the fierce reputation of these ancient people but consider whether what we think we know may not be true.  We will look at sources of evidence and understand how much they can be relied upon and draw our own conclusions about whether the Vikings were all bad.

Week 6

We invited our parents into school for a parent event this week.  We taught our parents how to identify and locate both Viking and Anglo-Saxon settlements on a map of our local area.  Colour coding these, we then created a zone to show where each group lived.  We  concluded that the Vikings couldn’t be the ruthless killers history tells us as they settled alongside the Anglo-Saxons.

Week 5- Team GB Athlete visit.

We were delighted to welcome Rebekah Green to our school on Friday.  Rebekah competes at world events in freestyle kayaking- a sport where she has to perform impressive tricks using her skills with the kayak.  Rebekah took our class for a fitness circuits session and then presented her story to un in an assembly.  The children loved taking part in this and thoroughly enjoyed meeting her.

Week 4- Publishing our Norse Myths

Over the past few weeks, Year 5 have been working really hard and written some Norse myths in English.  They've studied in Guided Reading and in our writing sessions different myths and understood the main features to expect.  After thorough planning, they then drafted, edited and published them.  Our children then hosted a storytelling session with Year 4 and Year 6 to read their myths.

The children loved doing this and got some tremendous feedback which justified all their hard work.

Week 3- PSHE

We have been looking at dilemmas this week and whether certain actions can lead to unintended consequences.  We looked at some real-life and fictitious scenarios and debated in groups what should be done.  We also looked at what would happen if the wrong decision was made and the impact that might have upon others.

Week 2- Science

This week, we have been delving into the parts of a flowering plant.  Revising our knowledge from KS1 and LKS2, we created a sticky note test to locate features Mr Myland described.  Having done this, we were then given a lily stem and followed guidance to carefully dissect the plant, identifying the advanced parts, such as the stamen.

We had a lot of fun doing so and learnt a huge amount about how to stay safe when working scientifically.

Week 1- Music

This week we listened to and appreciated some lullabies.  We considered the structure and then started to practice Brahm's lullaby using various instruments.  Over the coming weeks we will continue to develop our performance.
