Term 2- How are we damaging our world?

Welcome to Term 2 in Year 6! 🍂

This term will be full of exciting learning experiences as we continue to challenge ourselves and explore important topics. One of our key moments this term will be our Remembrance Assembly, where we will reflect on the sacrifices made during the World Wars and show respect for those who served. The children will use their historical learning to help lead this meaningful event for the school community.

As part of our enquiry into how human actions are affecting our planet, we will also be visiting an Energy from Waste Centre. This trip will help the children understand how waste is managed, the impact of pollution on the environment, and what we can do to help protect our world. It will be a fantastic opportunity to bring our learning to life and encourage thoughtful discussions about sustainability and responsibility.

As the term progresses, we will also be preparing for the excitement of Christmas, enjoying the festive atmosphere while continuing to work hard and celebrate our achievements. It promises to be a busy, reflective, and rewarding term for everyone in Year 6.

This term in Enquiry (Geography), Year 6 will explore the question “How are we damaging our world?” The children will learn about environmental challenges such as climate change, habitat destruction, and threats to wildlife. They will investigate how natural resources like minerals are used and consider the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources.

Throughout the term, pupils will also learn about the importance of protecting our oceans and ecosystems, and how human activity can affect the health of our planet. To apply their learning, the children will carry out their own sustainability enquiry in school and work towards creating a campaign to raise awareness about conservation and how people can make more sustainable choices.

Below you will find this term's newsletter and along with this term's enquiry mat.

Remembrance Assembly

The children took part in a beautiful Remembrance assembly, where they came together to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served in times of war. Through readings, songs, and moments of reflection, the children showed respect and understanding of why remembrance is important. As part of the commemorations, the Head Boy and Head Girl laid a wreath at the local cenotaph, representing the school and honouring those who gave their lives in service. It was a thoughtful and moving occasion that helped the children recognise the importance of remembering the past.

DT

In DT, the children explored different forms of energy and how renewable sources can help protect our planet. They researched types of energy such as wind, solar, and fossil fuels, discussing their advantages and disadvantages. Using their learning, the children designed and created their own fans to represent wind turbines, thinking carefully about how the blades move and how wind energy can be used to generate power. This hands-on activity helped them understand how renewable energy works and why it is important for a more sustainable future.

Lantern Making-Illuminate Parade

In Art, the children created lanterns in the shape of little people in preparation for Boston’s Illuminate Parade. They carefully designed and constructed their lanterns using a range of materials, focusing on shape, structure, and creativity. The activity allowed the children to develop their making skills while contributing to a special community event. It was wonderful to see their imaginative designs come to life as they prepared to take part in the parade and celebrate with the local community.

Diwali Workshop

The children enjoyed taking part in a Diwali dance workshop, where they learned about the traditions and celebrations of Diwali. During the session, they explored a range of expressive dance movements and rhythms inspired by the festival. The workshop gave the children the opportunity to celebrate culture through music and movement while developing confidence, coordination, and creativity. It was a joyful and energetic experience for everyone involved.

Science

In Science, the children explored electricity by investigating circuits and identifying faults within them. They learned about key electrical components such as bulbs, batteries, and wires, and discussed how these work together to create a complete circuit. The children then built their own circuits to investigate the question of how much voltage is needed to power a bulb. Through testing, observing, and problem-solving, they developed their understanding of how electrical circuits work and how different components affect the flow of electricity.
