Term 3- What happened once upon a time?

Week 1

We began our learning around our new enquiry question this week, ‘What happened Once Upon a Time?’. We read the story, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and wrote ‘wanted’ posters for Jack and the Giant. We explored the story through role play and our puppet theatre. We also looked at castles and thought about who lives in a castle and what we might find inside a castle.

Snow!!

Week 2

We read the story, ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Together, we retold the story using masks and taking on different characters. We also wrote captions for what the Gingerbread Man says. We have been exploring how the Gingerbread Man could have crossed the river without the fox; we predicted which materials would be best to build a boat and then tested if they would float or sink.

Week 3

We read the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We talked about the different materials that the houses were made from and why they were a good house or a bad house. We had a go at designing our own houses and writing what materials we would use. During our discover and do time, we built houses for the Three Little Pigs and explored if they were windproof by blowing them.

Week 4

We read the story ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. We talked about the different characters in the story and if they were good or bad characters. We enjoyed moving across a little bridge in an obstacle course outside in different ways to role play the goats. We also made scary troll masks! We loved reading an alternative story to the original called ‘The Three Billy Goats Fluff’ where the troll was a good character instead.

Week 5

We read the story ‘Cinderella’. We matched words to describe the characters such as ‘ugly’, ‘cruel’ and ‘beautiful’. We thought about the beginning, middle and end of the story and practiced sequencing the pictures in order. We then tried very hard to cut the pictures out and stick them down in the right order of the story. Some of us even wrote captions to match. We learnt about the artist Kandinsky and made artwork in the style of his using paper plates.

Week 6

For the last week of term, we enjoyed dressing up as fairytale characters and invited our parents to school for our parent event. We made sparkly crowns and magic mirrors! We learnt about Chinese New Year and practiced our cutting skills to make paper dragons. We also learnt about the celebration of Valentine’s Day and made cards to take home to our loved ones.
